Health and aged care workers face psychosocial hazards that are more intense and more varied than those in almost any other workplace. Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, employers must ensure the health and safety of their workers so far as is reasonably practicable, and that duty covers psychological health, not just physical safety.
Most organisations have mature physical safety programs. Managing psychosocial risk is newer ground, and the obligations have tightened sharply in recent years. Many states and territories have amended their WHS regulations to require organisations to actively identify, assess and control psychosocial hazards. The emphasis is on proactive management. An organisation that waits for a complaint, a compensation claim or an incident to prompt action is already behind its obligations.
