The sector right now

A sector in transformation

Australia’s aged care sector is navigating the most significant regulatory shift in its history. The Royal Commission changed expectations around quality, accountability and consumer voice, and the Aged Care Quality Standards now require providers to demonstrate that residents and families have genuine input into their care. At the same time, workforce pressures are acute. Attracting and retaining the right people in a sector that is emotionally demanding and historically undervalued remains one of the defining operational challenges providers face.

Insync works with aged care providers who understand that measurement is not a compliance exercise. It is the foundation of person-centred care. Our benchmarks are built specifically for the aged care context, so your results are always compared with those of organisations navigating the same regulatory environment, workforce pressures, and care expectations as you do.

What we hear from sector leaders

Four challenges every aged care leader recognises

These are not generic advisory observations. They are the specific pressures that aged care CEOs, Directors of Care and People and Culture leaders raise with us every time.

1

Meeting the Royal Commission standards without making it feel like compliance

The new Aged Care Quality Standards require genuine evidence of resident and family voice in care decisions. The challenge is building feedback systems that not just satisfy regulators but tangibly improve care, not just generate a report.

2

Workforce attraction, retention and burnout

The aged care workforce is under sustained pressure. High turnover, emotionally demanding work, and a historically constrained pay environment make attracting and retaining talent one of the most critical operational challenges providers face. Understanding what is driving people to stay or leave requires measurement that goes beyond generic engagement scores.

3

Capturing resident and family experience in a way that is meaningful

Survey fatigue is real in aged care settings. Residents may have complex communication needs. Families are often the primary feedback channel. Designing a feedback program that captures genuine experience without being burdensome requires sector-specific expertise.

4

Building a culture of continuous improvement

Accreditation cycles, unannounced visits and increased regulatory scrutiny mean that quality improvement can no longer be an annual exercise. Providers that build continuous feedback loops into their operations are better positioned to identify what’s working well, address issues early and demonstrate genuine improvement to regulators and families.

Common questions

Things sector leaders ask us

Do your benchmarks include aged care specific data?

Yes. Our benchmark pool includes data specifically from aged care providers, so your results are compared with organisations operating in the same regulatory environment, with the same workforce dynamics and care expectations. You will never be benchmarked against a generic average that includes industries with nothing in common with aged care.

Can you help us meet the Aged Care Quality Standards requirements for consumer feedback?

Yes. Our resident and family experience programs are designed specifically for the aged care context and built to meet the requirements of the Aged Care Quality Standards. We understand the compliance context and design feedback programs that satisfy regulators and generate genuine insight for improvement, not just a report to file.

How do you design surveys for residents who may have complex communication needs?

We work with your team to design a feedback approach that suits your resident population. That might mean shorter surveys, proxy feedback from families and representatives, paper surveys that your residents receive as letters or a combination of approaches across different care settings. There is no single template that works for all aged care providers, and we do not apply one.
