PROMs capture what patients report about their own health, function and quality of life. They are the evidence base for understanding whether care is achieving what it should for the people receiving it.
Traditional clinical assessments measure health outcomes from the clinician’s perspective. They capture what is observable and measurable in a clinical setting. What they do not always capture is the patient’s own experience of their health, i.e. how much pain they are in, how well they can perform daily tasks, and how their mental health and quality of life have been affected by a condition or treatment.
Patient-reported outcome measures fill that gap. By capturing health status, wellbeing and quality of life directly from the patient, PROMs provide a dimension of clinical evidence that no external assessment can replicate.
